Bibliotheque et archives de l'alliance Israelite Universelle

Alliance Israélite Universelle is a Paris-based international Jewish organization founded in 1860 by the French statesman Adolphe Crémieux to safeguard the human rights of Jews around the world. The organization promotes the ideals of Jewish self-defense and self-sufficiency through education and professional development.

The motto of the organization is the Jewish rabbinic injunction Kol yisrael arevim zeh bazeh, translated into French as Tous les israélites sont solidaires les uns des autres ("All Jews bear responsibility for one another").
In September 1989 the AIU inaugurated a new library which became the largest Jewish library in Europe, possessing over 120,000 items. Available at the library are the Alliance archives which have now been catalogued and offer a wealth of information on Jewish communities in the Mediterranean Basin as well as on French Jewry from the end of the 19th century through the first half of the 20th.

L'Alliance israélite universelle est une organisation juive internationale basée à Paris et fondée en 1860 par quelques jeunes Israélites dont Adolphe Crémieux pour garantir les droits humains des juifs dans le monde entier.
L'organisation encourage les idéaux de l'autodéfense juive et l'indépendance par l'éducation et et l'apprentissage professionnel.

En septembre 1989 l'AIU inaugurait une nouvelle salle de lecture pour sa bibliothèque qui devenait la bibliothèque d'études juives la plus grande en Europe, possédant plus que 120,000 ouvrages imprimés. Les archives de l'Alliance qui étaient cataloguées sont disponible et offrent une abondance d'informations sur les communautés juives du bassin méditerranéen ainsi que sur le judaïsme français de la fin du 19e siècle à nos jours.
